Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’ve been working in games and animation for over ten years now. I spent most of that time building and leading teams working on animation technology at Ubisoft Montreal. I grew up on the beach in Kenya obsessed with computers and getting enough virtual memory to run Wing Commander. I had a very practical childhood (my grandfather was an engineer) and can relate a lot of programming to the tinkering and experimentation of when I was a kid. While my domain of expertise is animation, I consider myself a generalist above all and am fore-mostly motivated by interesting problems and good design.
What brought you to DeepMotion?
Before I began working at DeepMotion I was a senior engine programmer for WarGaming working on the engine and technology for World Of Tanks. DeepMotion was attractive mostly because of the caliber of the team. Meetings and discussions I had with Jiayi Chong and Dr. Libin Liu were the main motivators for me. I knew that a small team with so much talent would end up producing something fantastic and I wanted to be a part of it.
What excites you most when you come into work?
I have really enjoyed my time at DeepMotion. Bringing together the raw talent and brilliant ideas from the rest of the team and bringing them together into a great design has been challenging and fulfilling. I am proud of the technology stack we have built that will empower our technological innovations and keep us at the cutting edge.
Where do you think the industry is going? How do you want to see DeepMotion’s work impact the world?
We’re at the beginning of a new technological revolution with machine learning. DeepMotion is perfectly positioned to on the new wave of animation fidelity and physical interaction. You know you’re on the right track when SIGGRAPH is full of presentations that for us are just a quick recap of the last year!
What is your favorite thing to do outside of DeepMotion?
I’ve been really getting into gardening! Trying to convince seasonal berries to grow on the equator is a fun challenge and the payoff is you get to eat them!
